What’s an Ultrasonic Cleaner: Do You Need One?

Written by:

I’ve been hearing a lot about ultrasonic cleaners just lately. So much so that I had to take a closer look at them.

What Is an Ultrasonic Cleaner

In simple terms, an ultrasonic cleaner is a device that uses sound waves to scrub grime from an object.

The item you want to clean is submerged in a liquid and then pummeled by the high-frequency sound waves.

Most of the time, the liquid can be plain water. But, you can also get special ultrasonic cleaning fluid for more of a deep clean.

How Does Ultrasonic Cleaning Work?

Ultrasonic cleaners use a form of abrasion to force the icky bits from the surface of the item you want to clean.

That sounds drastic, I know. But it’s actually a gentle process. Not like the abrasion usually associated with scouring pads or scrubbing brushes.

It’s basically lots of little bubbles of trapped energy exploding against the object with such intensity, that the dirt and grime just lose their grip.

So you could say, grime is jiggled into submission. I can’t help thinking that’s a fun way to go.

What Will an Ultrasonic Cleaner Clean?

There are lots of things that ultrasonic cleaners can be used on. Both in the home and garage. A popular use for ultrasonic cleaners is for jewelry like rings, necklaces, and even your spectacles.

You can even use ultrasonic cleaning on some parts of vintage and antique sewing machines. I’m talking screws, bolts, driveshafts, and bobbins. Not the actual bodies or machine heads.

Obviously, the size of your ultrasonic cleaner will dictate the type of item you can clean in it, but there are a whole host of materials that can be cleaned this way. Rubber, ceramics, metal, hard plastic, and glass are all likely candidates.

One key thing to bear in mind though, as ultrasonic cleaning requires liquid, whatever you want to clean will need to be waterproof. Or at the very least, not easily damaged by being submerged in water.

Do You Need an Ultrasonic Cleaner?

Cleaning things can be a chore sometimes. Especially when it comes to stubborn dirt that refuses to budge no matter how hard you scrub.

I’m always looking for ways to make cleaning the metal parts on my vintage sewing machines easier. As you know, relying on elbow grease and rubbing alcohol can be hard work! And time consuming.

With an Ultrasonic cleaner, the device will take the strain, while you can sit back, drink your coffee and watch the grime drop off.

Budget-Friendly Ultrasonic Cleaners For Your Jewelry

Ultrasonic cleaners come in a range of sizes. From the larger machines designed for use in the garage to the in-home options.

These ultrasonic cleaners are all a perfect size for use in the home. Better still, they are all budget-friendly and large enough to cope with a multitude of household items. From jewelry to your dentures.

While they may be a bit small for some of the larger parts on your vintage sewing machine, smaller metal parts like bobbins will fit a treat.

Being budget-friendly, they are a great way to find out if ultrasonic cleaning is something that will work for you.
